I-9 and E-Verify Essentials training focuses on the legal requirement for all U.S. employers to verify the identity and employment authorization of every new hire using Form I-9. E-Verify is an additional, voluntary program that allows employers to electronically confirm information from Form I-9 against government records to ensure a legal workforce. Training covers the proper completion and retention of Form I-9, the process of creating an E-Verify case, and understanding federal expectations for hiring practices.

Many more companies are opting to use both I-9 forms and E-Verify to minimize their liability with errors like social security numbers matching and outdated social security numbers or actual illegal workers violating immigration laws.

All federal workers have to use E-Verify. Some States have Mandatory use of E-Verify, and many companies volunteer for E-Verify. What might not be apparent is that E-Verify has been used to reduce liability for hiring illegal immigrants. Moreover, using E-Verify and ensuring I-9 form internal audits are an effective way to reduce liability and be prepared for external audits by ICE.

Session Highlights: Areas Covered in This Training:

  • Learn what resources are available for Employers to prepare for conducting an internal I-9 form audit
  • Learn what the E-Verify essentials are and how they impact the onboarding process
  • Learn how to effectively conduct an I-9 form internal audit that meets DHS requirements
  • Learn what Employers should consider when they use a notary to be their Employer Representative to complete I-9 forms
  • Learn how to create an I-9 Form Internal Audit, Storage, and Correction program to reduce errors and increase corrections
  • Learn why the electronic DHS process is mandated but yet missed by Employers
  • Learn what Should Be Included in your I-9 Form Verification Process that is required by DHS
  • Learn how creating an I-9 Verification Policy meets DHS requirements
  • Learn what to do when you identify errors when auditing E-Verify cases
  • Learn how long you need to notify employees of mismatched Social Security numbers when you audit E-Verify cases

Why You Should Attend:

In 2026, Form I-9 and E-Verify audits emphasize strict compliance with updated forms, proper handling of remote work verification, and thorough record-keeping to prepare for increased government scrutiny. Key steps for employers include performing regular internal audits, staying informed about federal and state legal changes, training staff on new procedures, and considering the use of E-Verify+ and other digital tools to simplify compliance and mitigate risks.
